The 10-Second Pause is a simple caregiver practice for moments when you feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, or ready to react.

This is not about being perfect. It is about creating a small space between what you feel and what you do next.

Use this when your child is:

  • crying
  • yelling
  • refusing
  • melting down
  • moving too fast
  • needing more from you than you feel able to give

You can also use it anytime you notice your body getting tense.

  1. Stop for a moment.
  2. Place one hand on your chest or belly.
  3. Feel your feet on the floor.
  4. Take one slow breath.
  5. Say quietly: “I can pause.”
  6. Notice what you feel.
  7. Choose your next response.

It can take as little as 10 seconds.

Try one of these simple phrases:

  • “This is a hard moment, not a bad child.”
  • “I can slow down.”
  • “My child needs support, and so do I.”
  • “I can respond after I breathe.”

After your pause, try:

  • “I’m here.”
  • “You’re having a hard time.”
  • “We can slow down.”
  • “I’m going to help you.”
  • “Let’s take one breath together.”

Pausing helps caregivers notice their own emotions before reacting.
